    What a thoughtful and articulate young man. I feel for him, and I identify both with the torture of insomnia, but also taking a path that not only did we not not choose, but hated at a visceral level and made us miserable. And I don't know about Alexander, but not being able to find a passion and forcing myself to pursue things just to gain others' approval, very much at my own expense, is devastating. It is also insidious, because it's only in retrospect that we realize that it's not our fault, and we are not failures for not following through on something that was never in line with our our true purpose (even if we don't know what that is - yet). So it's no small wonder that we would develop anxiety and crippling insomnia when we are not living our lives authentically. He also looks a lot like my nephew, so I think that I have an extra soft spot for him :)

    Not thinking about it is not the solution imo. You can't control your thoughts and worries anyway. What needs to be done instead is to let your brain experience sleepless nights and show it that their is nothing harmful happening and by that 're-wiring' the brain. Try not thinking about it is as helpful as the tip 'don't think about a pink elephant'.

    The decoupling so wonderfully sums up my development of issues around sleep... resonated very strongly. I was triggered - I then thought this was bad - I can keep falling back in to the struggle because I become fear of the thoughts and gets frustrated with myself for not responding in the 'right way'. Hope do you welcome the fear?

    I relate to the light coming in early morning in the summer already before 5am and that wakes me up. Its annoying but I know what it is. I dont like sleeping with an eye mask all night so I put it on in the morning and I know why I am waking up and just put it on and usually fall back asleep fine. If not I give rain sounds or a podcast a try if I feel I really need that extra hour or two to sleep.

    Thanks Cris - I have a question related to hyper-arousal. I feel like I am slowly getting to control the fear of not sleeping that results in hyper-arousal but is there a case that any other hyper-arousal would also causes not to sleep. Again, I think I am get a good handle around fight or flight response related to the fear of not sleeping but am still in the speed bump phase due to other issue that causes hyper arousal which would then causes me to not sleep.. thanks

    I can relate to this so much.. began 8 weeks ago for me. I have a 1 & 4 yr old. My youngest still nursing. I slept perfectly fine then suddenly one night I drifted off and had hypnogogic hallucination and pulled back from sleep. Every single time all night. Then again the next. Took meds 3 nights to sleep. Wanted off pills but again same issues i would have awareness or jerks whenever i drift off that wakes me. 2am i found this channel and watched several videos. Then slept deeply for 1.5 hrs! Then the next two nights were 5-6 hrs sleep i was amazed. Then had a bad night and spiraled again. Its been back and forth since. The bad nights are SO hard. It flares anxiety back up and i struggle with sleep anxiety now. These stories are so helpful because it feels so rare to struggle like this. Nobody i know has this issue. Its hard to push away thoughts that something is wrong with my brain or body..i had health anxiety already and my brain wants me to panic. So its been a huge struggle with this. No doctors ever know what I'm describing not even a neurologist! Googling obviously doesn't help much but so hard to avoid it. Im sleeping on the couch right now.. I'm not ready to go back into the bedroom yet. I notice falling asleep to the TV helps me the most.. maybe because my brain is focused on the tv while drifting off. So now if i dont fall asleep to the tv before my husband falls asleep i worry but i know this is probably a sleep effort now. Haha i have activated charcoal to.. all the things to try. Thing is.. most nights i sleep good like 7-8 hrs with a few 5-6 hr nights and a bad night now and then. Yet I'm still fearful of it happening because its scary to me.. to the point ill stay up for hours because i dont want to experience it. It feels so unnatural. So excited to see another hypnic jerk awareness video.. so many feel alone with this because its "rare" or least its how it feels. Thank you for sharing!!

    As a father to a newborn, I can relate to so much of what you talked about: newborn waking every two hours, them making all kinds of noises while they sleep, being told SLEEP when they sleep (pressure), being told to take naps whenever possible (I wish it were that easy), sleeping separately from snoring wife because I have needed limited noise and light, waking up with every little newborn sound while they sleep, taking turns with my spouse to sleep isolated in a room.

    Technically you don't have to read 18 papers, and you shouldn't, because you will end up with biased information. Any decent systematic-review and meta-analysis will be comprehensive enough to include the relevant studies on the subject of interest; and the reviewers will have done the scrutinizing and critical analysis for you. All you have to do is read the abstract and discussion sections. They are more accessible since they tend to be written in plain language. I haven't missed the point. Obviously most people are not doing literature searches even if they're not in crisis. But if they ever wanted to, SR & MA would be the way to go. Loved this interview!

  • @skeptik-ci5xo
    @skeptik-ci5xo 3 дня назад

    I empathize with this young woman. My insomnia (still ongoing) got so severe at one point that I would bolt awake with severe panic attacks, adrenaline flooding my body, every night for at least a year. I was in such agonizing distress from lack of sleep and the sheer terror that would build up each day about having to deal with it again that night. I did not know how I was going to make it another day, so I took two bottles of pills and ended up in a psychiatric ward. I was only there for 5 days (they should have kept me longer, because I didn't sleep in the hospital either), and my life was turned completely upside down after I got out, which made it worse. I didn't think it was possible. I have not slept without some type of medication in over 10 years. There is a reason why sleep torture was outlawed at the Geneva Convention. Because torture is exactly what it is. It is disabling. I do not want to be dependent on medication for the rest of my life, but I am too afraid of not being able to function or getting severely ill if I try to go a night without it. It's never a good time to experiment when you have adult responsibilities that you can't put on hold, even if it's to take care of yourself so that you can manage them.

    Understanding that it’s actually the fear of fear has clicked something in me. I’ve had chronic insomnia for 9 years where I can stay up for days in a state of flight or fight. When I feel the security alarm go off in my body when it’s time for bed, I allow the fear to be there and understand the mechanism of protection. It does pass when you don’t try to fix the fear or add on. I dont try to achieve sleep since it’s passive. I don’t try to sleep when I’m not sleepy (eyes closing-more than tired). I don’t have a bed time. Things aren’t perfect but I finally have hope! Thank you so much🩷

    hello, thank you I have just found this channel and it is surreal how profoundly impacted I have been since only two weeks, I use to feel anxiety every evening before sleeping, trying to control the anxiety thinking that I was doing it right when I was doing it all wrong by trying so hard to let go, and that evening anxiety is now vanished. I thought I was so alone in this experience, that my brain was broken and finding this community, seeing all the aspects of my struggle portrayed in the very precise details as told by other’s experiences and educational content has been life changing ! this channel is a gift and I wish everyone who struggles could have access to this. Thank you so much, I am so greatful and so inspired, hopeful and at peace in this process of recovery which I recognize will not be a straight line up. Thank you thank you for your work. This channel deserves so much more visibility.

    I need this reminder from time to time. I've been using the Bedtyme app (with coach Chris) for a bit over a month now, and although my sleep has definitely improved, I did have a timeline in my head on where I should be by "such and such" a time. I keep looking at how far I have to go instead of how far I've already come in my journey. I'm definitely not the most patient person, so hearing you emphasize that I need to be patient and let the process work on its own time definitely helps.

Thanks to all the education I’ve received, my sleep has improved immensely and I’ve let go of a lot of fear and anxiety. Even though my sleep is pretty much back to normal, some fear still lingers but I’m learning that it’s part of the process and to have the willingness to experience the fear whenever it decides to show up.
